Description

This is a Book cover for a friend who writes charming children tales, Hi Carlos!.
I decided to make a gift to him and make the cover of the book he is writing.
Making this Paint was a total challenge and a lot of fun wile doing it. I'm not too seasoned doing Backgrounds but I love this painting.
I wanted to communicate the feeling that you have when visiting a beautiful place for the first time, and when you walk around the corner and behold the magnificent view, you just have to stop and stare at the landscape for a few minutes.
Took inspiration form the amazing paintings of Elite, GFXartist sponsor vacher and the paintings of John Howe, that guy simply rocks.
Well I hope you like it, this is practically done, I have spend lots of hours doing it and I'm too lazy to make corrections at this point, but your comments and directions are always appreciated for next works.

Oh, the small 716px doesnt do any justice, please look at the bigger version, the original is 5100x3300px at 300dpi

Its a nice painting, but it suffers from a lack of focus and depth aswell as some scale problems. You have scattered the focus by detailing many small subjects equally, making them steal attention from eachother instead of complementing eachother. The big mountain in the background has too much color and darkness to be that far back, it should be affected more by the color of the atmosphere.

Keep it up

Nice work Pedro,

love the colours you've used here
I agree with Claeng about the focus/depth issue

The overall feeling is quite magical

Love how you rendered the grass (thumbup)

Claeng is right. It's interesting painting, but characters are not connected with each other - the composition is off. The characters are confusing the viewer. so try to combine them with a right focus and proportions
Another crit of mine - you should work on mixing the colors, colors of light, shadow and reflection - even with such a close to monochromatic palette you could work more on mixing colors.
I like the mountains (nice textures there:)) and the castle.Very nice atmosphere.
Good job overall!Keep it up)

Thanks for the comments, a lot of advices! that I like it.
Curlyhair, The odd composition is because this is a splash paged book cover, it looks very well when is cut in half and with the title on top :)

Nice perspective and colors!.....the 2 characters have different style.....I would eliminate the one at the left.

Since you said this is for children, then i think you've done great.
Children have a completely different way of regarding pictures and paintings. And I think that adding any more depth or atmosphere to this artwork will make this LESS appealing to children.
Another thing, if this book contains different unrelated tales, then it's not wrong to add characters that don't fit together in the cover. In addition to that, children like character variety in a painting and they tend to give each character a separate story and background using their fantastic imagination...
Overall, I think you did best for the purpose.

Oh thank you enthralled, I started to think that I do not communicate the children style very well, the book is about 6 different tales, and there are several picturesque characters.
I tried to place a lot of things that appeal to me when I was younger, like a rainbow, the mist, puffy clouds, huge landscapes and massive mountains, I hope the children could see in this picture a place to play whit their imagination.
Thanks for all the constructive and kind comments.

It's a good idea to ask for some children's opinions about your artwork.. for instance, ask them what pleases them most, and what pleases them least in your painting... This might help.
I think most artists above who criticized your work probably looked across the fact that it's for children before criticizing. Otherwise, they have good points.

Nice job. I love the feel of the whole picture. It looks like a very nice panorama to me. Must be great standing there where the figures are!
